Practiced in many Eastern European countries during the Spring season and associated with the Orthodox Easter holiday, Pysanka, originated in the Ukraine and involves using a wax-resist method to create intricate patterns on the delicate surface of a hollow egg. Pysanka, which comes from the word pysaty, “to write” in Russian, is the art of decorating eggs with meaningful and mystic symbolism that reflects ideas of fertility, good harvests, protection from evil and the circle of life. The one-day workshop, offered on March 24th and 25th will be led by Kelle Marsh, and will instruct students on the decorating and dying process from beginning to end, with participants being able to take home a decorative ornament they have created.
