Ceramics
March 26 – June 5, 2011
Artist Jun Kaneko is recognized internationally for his innovative work in clay and glass, painting and drawing, installation and public art. Kaneko was born in Nagoya, Japan in 1942 and moved to Los Angeles in 1963 as a young painter hoping to further his education. Through his painting teacher in Japan, Satoshi Ogawa, Kaneko befriended ceramic professor and artist Jerry Rothman, who had studied with Peter Voulkos, then already an international name in ceramic sculpture. Kaneko studied at the Chuinard Art Institute for a year, where he began his work in ceramics. By 1966, Voulkos had offered Kaneko a space in his studio school at UC Berkeley, where he became an assistant. He completed his MFA at Scripps College.
SCM is presenting Jun Kaneko, a traveling exhibit of nearly forty sculptures, paintings and works on paper in an exhibition designed by the artist and travelled by Smith Kramer Traveling Exhibitions.
SCM is grateful to Steven and Nancy Oliver and Dr. David Noorthoek for their support of this exhibition.
