Javier Machado: Optic Fiber-Photographs of Cuba
May 21, 2010 - Jun 27, 2010
Javier Machado, a native of Cuba, aims to capture the unique ambiance of Cuban daily life in his work - the interplay between economic crisis, propaganda, and nationalism, and the idiosyncratic individual approaches to surviving these hardships. Machado studied photography in Havana, and worked as a photographer for the Cuban National Archive. Since 2003, Machado has lived in the United States, and his relationship to his Cuba photographs has changed. For him, they now also reflect feelings of distance, separation, nostalgia, and family ties. Optic Fiber, the title of this exhibit, mirrors these themes, by suggesting that the visual world of the photographs ties together artist and place.
