Among the Eucalypts: Paintings by Judith Belzer
Jul 28 - Sep 9, 2007
Judith Belzer, originally from the East Coast, has painted elements of the New England landscape for many years. After moving to the West Coast three years ago, her work shifted to a focus on large western trees, which are "figures in the landscape from which we can glean some of the most important information about a place and its natural history," Belzer states. Their scale reminds her of nature’s force and how inconsequential our human attempts to exert control over it can be. This new work explores the eucalyptus, a strange and beautiful species that carries a contradictory set of associations here in northern California, where the beauty of its peeling bark and elephantine forms is inflected by the knowledge that the species is non-native, invasive and highly flammable.
