Art Collection

The Museum’s art collection focuses on the artists who have lived and worked, taught and influenced the artistic culture of Sonoma County and surrounding areas. We are actively building the collection in four areas:

· Post war modernism of Northern California

· Work by teachers and artists associated with Santa Rosa Junior College

· Work by teachers and artists associated with Sonoma State University

· Other significant artists who have lived or worked in Sonoma County

The Museum’s Collections Committee reviews all donation requests. Exceptions to the present collecting focus are made on a case-by-case basis. Other areas of particular interest for the collection include nineteenth and early twentieth-century landscape paintings by Northern California artists, Bay Area ceramic artists, Pond Farm, work by Christo and Jeanne Claude, Bay Area arts and crafts metalwork, and contemporary art.


History Collection

The Museum strives to craft a history collection that allows for the longest thread of chronological representation of Sonoma County history and culture. This is one of the defining aspects of the collection that separates the Sonoma County Museum of History from the several collecting institutions (ie. city museums, Fort Ross, Sonoma State Parks etc.) that have more narrowly defined collections (either regionally or chronologically) or from the non-collecting institutions in the area. Therefore, the museum is less likely to collect any one area in great depth (particularly when that area duplicates a collecting focus of another museum or institution in Sonoma County), but it will strive to have a collection that can represent the thread of Sonoma County history and culture from early Native American settlement; to the time of the earliest Russian and Mexican arrivals; to the American period of the region’s history, even into very recent times. In selected areas of emphasis the Museum may decide to collect in greater depth.
